How the test is arranged: after you apply, with eight weeks' notice and no national dates

You cannot book the Staatsbürgerschaftsprüfung on your own. Your provincial office sets the date once your application is in, tells you at least eight weeks ahead and lets you retake it as often as you need.

How dates are set

From § 1 and § 6 of the federal exam regulation and from the provinces' own pages.

The exam is for people who have applied for citizenship. It is arranged by the office handling the application.
Each province holds sittings as needed, and at least once every calendar half-year.
You must be told the date, the place and the scope at least eight weeks in advance.
The office may instead agree a different date with you, and must tell you that this is possible.
There is no national calendar of sittings. None of the official sites we checked publishes one.
In Niederösterreich the district authorities run the exam for the province.

What the provinces say

Vienna's MA 35 sends you a date after you apply. If you cannot come, you book a new one by contact form or phone. Vienna warns that if you miss your date twice, your application is refused.

Vorarlberg arranges the date at the time you apply, where a test is needed. Tirol gives you the date and the material after you apply. So plan your study around the application, not around a calendar.

Results and retakes

Papers are marked without delay as Bestanden or Nicht bestanden. A pass earns a certificate. If you fail, you are told so and reminded that you can retake it.

Retakes are unlimited, and the date is agreed with you. A failed attempt does not pause the six month period your office has to decide, so the clock keeps running while you prepare again. No minimum wait between attempts is published.

Arranging the test, in practice

Can I sit the test before I apply?

The regulation arranges it for people who have already applied. None of the provincial pages we checked mentions a sitting before an application.

What if the date does not suit me?

Contact your office. It can agree a different date with you. In Vienna, missing two dates leads to refusal.

How many times can I retake it?

As many times as you need. § 6 of the regulation says a failed exam can be repeated without limit.
